Vicinity’s robust district energy network supplies reliable cooling to over 3 million square feet of conditioned space in Atlanta.

On the northwestern edge of Midtown Atlanta, the Atlantic Station neighborhood is home to a burgeoning mixed-use community comprised of retail, commercial office space, and residential apartment buildings. Supported by Vicinity Energy’s robust underground chilled water network, this 140-acre mixed-use development is poised for additional growth over the next 15 years. As a key energy partner, Vicinity is also growing and investing in our infrastructure to meet this current and anticipated demand.

With a 2-mile network of chilled water distribution pipes, Vicinity’s robust district energy network supplies reliable cooling to over 3 million square feet of conditioned space. With district energy cooling, individual buildings don’t require onsite chillers or cooling towers – freeing up space for building amenities, eliminating the risk of onsite combustion, and reducing upfront capital and ongoing operations and maintenance (O&M) costs. By continuously investing in the city’s infrastructure, we’re not only delivering reliable cooling, but also reducing carbon impacts.

Investing in District Energy

By centralizing and aggregating the production of heat, hot and chilled water to multiple buildings, district energy cuts down on the amount of fuel that would be required by individual buildings using onsite generation, and the resulting carbon emissions. Furthermore, it allows for faster, more complete transitions to clean energy options as they become available. District systems and infrastructure can easily be updated to integrate new technologies and/or renewable fuels that benefit a great number of buildings in a geographic footprint. This allows for carbon footprint reductions at a scale that would be impossible to achieve on an individual basis.

How District Energy Works

District energy is an innovative and resilient energy solution that uses a centrally located facility, or facilities, to generate thermal energy—heat, hot water or chilled water—which is then transported through highly insulated underground pipes directly to nearby buildings, avoiding the need for boilers, chillers and cooling towers in individual buildings.
