Green Steam is Reducing Philadelphia’s Carbon Footprint

Green steam refers to our low carbon thermal product, which in large part comes from a combined heat and power (CHP) process and the integration of renewable energy. By combining the production of thermal energy (used for both heating and cooling) and electricity into one process, CHP results in the most efficient use of fuel to generate electricity and condition buildings, using far less fuel than when heat and power are produced separately. Vicinity Energy’s district energy network delivers 99.99% reliable, clean steam, hot water and chilled water throughout the City of Philadelphia. Our interconnected facilities have built-in redundancy, back-up generation and multiple water and fuel sources to ensure you stay up and running. We are continuously implementing a cleaner energy mix and investing in the city’s infrastructure to reduce carbon impacts, with the goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Vicinity’s multimillion-dollar investments have improved the city’s critical energy infrastructure, enabling Philadelphia’s integrated district energy system to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by nearly 300,000 tons annually – the equivalent of removing almost 65.000 cars from the roads. Vicinity’s investments have also increased the resiliency of our robust and agile critical energy infrastructure, ensuring 99.99% reliable energy delivery. As a result, customers enjoy increased capacity, reliability and overall system efficiency and can feel good knowing that they’re supporting clean, renewable energy distribution.
