Summary

CampusEnergy 2026 convened more than 1,300 district energy professionals in National Harbor, MD, for a high-impact program of education, exhibits, technical tours, and peer exchange. Featuring podium and poster presentations, a sold-out exhibit hall, and robust dialogue on the future of district energy, the conference underscored the strength, momentum, and collaborative spirit of the campus energy community. The Vicinity team attended sessions, held engaging presentations, moderated panels, and shared knowledge with peers.

Key insights

  • Vicinity’s Chief Development Officer Brian Mueller presented “Maximizing Energy Efficiency with Heat Pumps and District Energy”, giving attendees an inside-look at how industrial-scale heat pumps are helping today’s district energy systems meet the challenges faced by the industry to provide efficient, reliable, thermal energy service.
  • Vicinity’s Director of Energy Commodities Rohan Sinha joined the panel “Fueling Tomorrow: Igniting the Next Energy Revolution”. The group discussed insights into emerging low-carbon fuels and technologies and a regional look at navigating evolving regulations, cooling restrictions, and long-term planning constraints.
  • Vicinity’s Regional Vice President of Operations Don Silvia moderated and spoke on several throughout the event program, offering key insights into his expertise on maintenance strategies, optimizing system monitoring and improving system performance.

Event FAQs

What is district energy?
District energy uses a centrally-located facility, or facilities, to generate thermal energy – heat, hot water, or chilled water – for commercial buildings that form an “energy district.” The energy is transported through underground pipes to meet the needs of commercial and institutional buildings such as life sciences, college and hospital campuses, museums, hospitality, airports, and office parks.
What are the benefits of district energy systems?
District energy provides multiple advantages: Freedom from asset ownership and the costs associated with maintenance, Wholesale energy pricing and stability, Efficient energy delivery Greater reliability and redundancy in energy supply, Reduced carbon footprint
How will Vicinity decarbonize?
The backbone of Vicinity’s decarbonization plan is the electrification of its operations. Electrified district energy utilizes existing infrastructure at a central facility and the existing, robust district energy distribution piping to decarbonize urban buildings. Vicinity will import carbon-free electrons through co-located, existing substations to power electric boilers, coupled with industrial-scale heat pumps and thermal storage technology, to deliver carbon-free steam for heating, cooling, sterilization, humidification, and other thermal energy needs.
What progress has Vicinity made in our commitment to net zero carbon emissions?
Vicinity is actively greening our operations. We are purchasing renewable and carbon-free electricity to power our equipment and have incorporated biogenic fuels into our operations in Philadelphia, Boston, and Cambridge. Currently, we have installed our first electric boiler at our facility in Cambridge, MA, and it is delivering carbon-free eSteam™, to our customers across Boston and Cambridge. We have also begun the design process for the industrial-scale heat pump complex that will be installed at our Cambridge facility by 2028. Our team is completing extensive updates at our Cambridge facility to make way for the heat pump complex. Our facilities across the country, in cities like Philadelphia and Kansas City, are also undergoing preparations to install these innovative technologies and decarbonize.
